{HISTORY}

A verb, a pattern name, a boat, a planter, a tender love affair that's what this rare vintage gravy boat represents.

Made in 1937 by W.S. George, this boat features their Parseme pattern of gracefully falling flowers in cheerful shades of red, blue and yellow. In all of its shabby beauty, this gravy boat has seen some excitement over the course of the past 85 years. That's what we love about it best.

The chips on this server are old - possibly occurring not long after it was originally purchased in the 1930s, which means to make it all the way to today, this boat was tenderly cared for, despite its flaws, for a long, long time. A chip there on the handle, a chip here on the spout.  One chip below at the base, a few more uptop along the rim. This heirloom could have easily been tossed into the trash after it met with a little calamity once, twice or even three times. Yet, here it still is. Displaying its fragility like a badge of honor. One that has withstood eight decades of eventful history.

Founded by William Shaw George in 1904, the W.S. George Pottery Company operated four plants in Ohio and Pennsylvania where they made dishes for both the domestic market and the hotel industry. Successful up until the mid-20th century, W.S. George went bankrupt in 1955. Royal China Company purchased the pottery plants in an attempt to keep products in circulation, but RCC officially stopped production in 1960.

So many pieces of W.S. George pottery have been lost to time, making each new (old) find that much more exciting. This gravy boat may no longer be an ideal server in the kitchen as far as meals go, but it does now offer its services as a lovely planter for a table centerpiece or a kitchen counter arrangement.

Like an art piece, its very inviting to the eye, and makes you wonder about the stories that have made up its life journey. This was not one of those kitchen workers that sat idly by in a cabinet untouched for years and years. This one was part of an active kitchen, sitting tableside amongst robust eaters and enthusiastic conversation.

Every chip here tells a story.

Oh if only we knew each one!
